Notes from South Africa
On the international ballet circuit, Cape Town, South Africa, is a bit off the beaten path, which is precisely why South African International Ballet Competition founder Dirk Badenhorst dreamed up this event designed to draw attention both inside and outside the country to the art form. I was invited to be on the panel of judges and arrived in Cape Town two days ago. It’s a beautiful city, and because it is summer here, the weather is gorgeous! We got down to business yesterday with a press conference and a formal dinner with First Lady Mrs. Zaneli Mbeki at the historic and elegant president’s residence. It was a gala start to what is already an historic event. The competition begins today with the 54 juniors and seniors presenting their first classical solos.
