Forsythe Improv Workshop

November 28, 2001

For dancers trained in ballet, improvisation can feel like a completely foreign concept. Yet so many contemporary choreographers these days ask dancers to improv as a tool for creating movement. More and more companies are even including improv as part of their auditioning process.

If heading down to your local modern studio for a crash course feels overwhelming, there’s a better option: Take a Forsythe workshop. The choreographer’s improv method is rooted in classical ballet positions, and even though by the end of class you’ll be thinking about the way your limbs are related to each other and how your body moves in space in a completely new way, it will still feel familiar.

The Dance Complex in Cambridge, Massachusetts is offering three Forsythe workshops with Riley Watts, currently a dancer with The Forsythe Company, next month. They will take place on September 13, 15 and 16 from 10 am to 2 pm. The workshops are $30 each, or $75 for all three. Pre-registration is encouraged—email [email protected].
