National Dance Week starts tomorrow. We’ve been so busy putting the final touches on Pointe’s June/July issue that I almost forgot about it until my home studio, Professional Ballet School in California, posted on Facebook that they’re offering free dance classes. If you’re in the Bay Area, I highly recommend you check one out. My personal favorite: Saturday morning open intermediate/advanced ballet taught by Zoltan Peter—his Vaganova-based combinations give your technique a serious workout, but he has a way of making every class feel like fun.
PBS is far from the only studio offering free classes. Check out the “What’s Happening” page on nationaldanceweek.org for a partial list of special workshops, competitions, celebrations, seminars, performances and dance parties in your state. There will even be a multiple simultaneous flash mobs this Saturday in cities all over the country. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to try something new; you never know what you might discover.
