Sneaker Ballets

November 28, 2001

Sneakers aren’t the primary footwear you associate with New York City Ballet. But next Friday, NYCB dancers will slip out of their pointe shoes and into more casual kicks for the free Fridays at Noon series at the 92nd Street Y. Ellen Bar, a former dancer who now works as the company’s director of media projects, hosts the quirky program featuring past and present sneaker ballets. She’ll show clips of NY Export: Opus Jazz, a 2010 film (made by Bar and NYCB soloist Sean Suozzi) of the iconic Robbins ballet danced by current NYCBers in New York City streets, empty pools, parks, train tracks. School of American Ballet student Elizabeth Wallace will perform the premiere of soloist Adam Hendrickson’s Systematic Reverb, set to music by principal Sebastien Marcovici. Principals Sterling Hyltin and Robert Fairchild will dance a work-in-progress by corps member Troy Schumacher. And it will all be done in sneakers. See 92Y.org for more info.
