city.ballet.? Every Monday, we’ll be posting a new interview with a different cast member from the AOL On docu-series about New York City Ballet. This week, we talk to principal Jared Angle.
New York City Ballet is a family affair: There are no fewer than three brother-sister or brother-brother duos in its principal roster. What’s it like working with a sibling? Not so bad, says principal Jared Angle—unless you’re being filmed side-by-side with your brother (Tyler Angle) for a city.ballet. segment titled “Relationships.” “I have to admit I was relieved they introduced us as brothers early on—I was worried people might think we’re married, given the same last names,” he says. “That’s definitely a new phenomenon!”
Ultimately, though, Angle was happy to be part of a project that gives an honest look at the life of a professional ballet dancer. “I haven’t seen other behind-the-scenes ballet shows, and I don’t want to start any Twitter wars,” he says, laughing. “But we all had confidence in the production team—they never seemed like they were trying to trick us into crying on camera or to start fights.”
The result, Angle believes, is something that can benefit dance insiders as well as a general audience. “As a ballet student, you know what a dance career looks like from the outside—from the stage, from videos—but you don’t actually know how hard the work is,” he says. “It’s better to get a glimpse of that through things like city.ballet. than to be shocked by it when you get a job.”
