Dear Olympics: Please Bring Back Ski Ballet

November 28, 2001

I’m always looking for more dancerelated events to watch during the Olympics, a confession I made last week, which is why I can’t believe I missed out ondrum roll pleaseski ballet!

Apparently, the sport was around for about 30 years. It peaked as a demonstration sport at the 1988 and 1992 Winter Olympics, which basically means that it had a two-time trial run before the Olympic committee decided it didn’t suit the Games. After that, public interest in ski ballet waned, and the International Ski Federation dropped it as an official sport. 2000 was the last time anyone saw an arabesque on skis. (In competition, that is. I’m sure you whip them out when you hit the slopes.)

Ski ballet combined puffy neon snowsuits and awkward ski poles with the grace of ballet. What’s not to love? A nice montage awaits you, below.
