"Breaking Pointe" Season 2, Episode 8 Recap

November 28, 2001

What does Sir Frederick Ashton’s Cinderella look like? Although it’s been the focus of the current season of “Breaking Pointe,” up until last night’s episode, we never actually saw much of the ballet. But we finally got a good dose of stage time this week. (Of course pop songs were consistently dubbed over Prokofiev’s music, but we’ll take what we can get.) It was closing night of the run, and the show must have decided it was time to show what Zach looks like onstage when his wig’s not falling off, how Christiana performs more than five steps at a time, why Adam thinks Rex is worth promoting to first soloist. I cried when Josh was talking to his mom, telling her that she was the reason he was up on that stage, and I loved hearing Adam give his dancers corrections. I wish we could see more details like that. They’re the moments that show how the company really works on a day-to-day basis.

The bad news? It’s doubtful we’ll get much more dancing this season. For the finale next week, the dancers are heading to Los Angeles for a fundraiser, and although we’re promised a steamy Alison/Rex pas de deux, it looks like the rest of the episode of will focus on Californian shenanigans. Oh, well. The dancing was good while it lasted.
