James Whiteside is ABT's Newest Principal

November 28, 2001

Congratulations to James Whiteside! American Ballet Theatre announced today that the talented dancer, who joined the company as a soloist last season, will be a principal as of October 30th.

A former principal with Boston Ballet, where he was an audience and critical favorite, Whiteside shone during his first season at ABT. Already his repertoire with the company includes the Slave in Le Corsaire, Basilio and Espada in Don Quixote, the Nutcracker Prince in The Nutcracker, Romeo in Romeo and Juliet, Prince Désiré in The Sleeping Beauty, Prince Siegfried in Swan Lake and Orion in Sylvia. He also made a strong showing in Mark Morris’ Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes, and as the mysterious leading man in the second section of Alexei Ratmansky’s Shostakovich Trilogy.

In other words, to most ballet fans, this promotion doesn’t come as a surprise. But it’s certainly well-deserved.

(And if you’re a Whiteside fan, stay tuned for our December/January issue!)
