Summer Intensive Diary: Out with a Sprain

November 28, 2001

This summer,
Pointe is taking a peek inside the Joffrey Ballet’s International Summer Intensive with guest blogs from dancer Rachel Davis of New Jersey.

Last week, unfortunately, I sprained my foot and had to sit out most of the classes. Fortunately, the Joffrey studios are conveniently located by an urgent care center and I was still able to learn by observing class.Watching other dancers actually helps me improve my own dancing because I realize what looks good and can apply what I see and the corrections that are made. It’s inspiring, and for me personally, watching New York City Ballet as a child was what made me want to pursue dance.

Our group had a different teacher almost everyday. I find interesting how some of the teachers reiterate many fundamental corrections while others explain corrections in a new way that I haven’t heard before. In my opinion, it’s important to constantly hear the same combinations and corrections so they become drilled into you. However, a balance is important. Most teachers at Joffrey reiterate the same points, but the energy these teachers bring to the class is wonderful. However, when you find the kind of teacher who explains things in a way that feels completely new, which is more rare in my experience, they open your mind and remind you of your love for dance.

My time here in Chicago and at Joffrey is coming to a close. But I am looking forward to the last week and the end-of-the-summer performances. And I’m looking forward to finally being able to dance again.
