Former New York City Ballet Principal Albert Evans Has Passed
Albert Evans, a NYCB principal who was only the second African American principal dancer in the company’s history, died on Monday night following a short illness. He was 46 years old.
Evans retired from performing in 2010. During his career, he was noted for his portrayal of Balanchine roles, and originated many roles in Peter Martins’ ballets. Since leaving the stage, he had been serving as one of the company’s ballet masters. He was also featured in the recent documentary Ballet 422 as an assistant to NYCB resident choreographer Justin Peck. Though he wasn’t the subject of the film, his vivacious personality shone through.
“The entire New York City Ballet family is heartbroken by the loss of our beloved friend and colleague Albert Evans,” Peter Martins said in a statement. Evans will be deeply missed by NYCB and all of his fans, who remember his powerful performances.
