Celebrating Ten Years of Pointe

November 28, 2001

In Pointe’s debut issue, we profiled an energetic young New York City Ballet dancer and choreographer named Christopher Wheeldon. “As an emerging choreographer, it was fantastic to have exposure from Pointe,” says Wheeldon. “So much of getting out there, having your work seen and being hired is through exposure. In 2000, I’d really only choreographed two or three ballets in this country.” The next year, he was named resident choreographer for NYCB.

Since then, Wheeldon has choreographed for Boston Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Colorado Ballet and The Royal Ballet, to name just a few. Now he’s focused on building the repertoire of Morphoses/The Wheeldon Company. He founded the New York- and London- based troupe in 2006 with the goal of presenting contemporary pieces that honor classical principles. “Ballet choreographers are few and far between these days,” says Wheeldon. “I hope to inspire other young choreographers to create ballets that spring from the classical tradition.”—Khara Hanlon
