Dutch National Ballet’s Giselle Is in Theaters This Month
Bunheads, grab your popcorn. On Sunday, January 21, Dutch National Ballet will present a special screening of Giselle at hundreds of movie theaters across the country, with select encore presentations on January 24. The film will star principals Olga Smirnova and Jacopo Tissi in the roles of Giselle and Albrecht, respectively, with soloist Floor Eimers as Myrtha. The ballet was filmed onstage at the Dutch National Opera & Ballet main stage, featuring live accompaniment by The Dutch Ballet Orchestra.
Both Smirnova and Tissi left their former positions with The Bolshoi Ballet shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine, with Smirnova joining DNB directly and Tissi joining this past August after dancing with Teatro alla Scala for a year in between. Both dancers were featured in former cinema broadcasts hosted by the Bolshoi prior to their departure. Now, audiences will have the chance to witness the stars perform together in the classic Romantic masterpiece from their new home in Amsterdam.
Filmed by Isabelle Julien and produced by François Duplat and Amaury Lafarge, Giselle is presented in the U.S. by Iconic Events and produced and distributed worldwide by Pathé Live, the former film producer for Bolshoi Ballet in Cinemas. Tickets are available for purchase now at the production’s website.
