3 Ways To Bring Calm To Your Life

November 28, 2001
The word “summer” conjures images of long days, warm beaches and endless sunshine, but we’re often busier than we remember during those much-anticipated months. Whether you’re packing up to head to a new summer intensive or fitting in extra classes at your studio to prepare for next season, here are three quick fixes for when things feel chaotic, to help you tap into an easy, breezy summer mindset:

1. Find a friend:
If you’ve had a frustrating day in the studio, unwinding with your friends may be just what you need. A 2011 study found that the presence of friends can help buffer the effects of negative experiences, and reduces the stress hormone cortisol.
2. Get enough sleep:
A study from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine found that sleep deprivation caused the same negative effects on the immune system as stress does. A good night’s rest will help you curb stress and stay healthy for long days of dancing.

3. Be thankful:
A study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that participants who kept a record of what they were grateful for felt happier, had more energy and reported fewer health complaints. Try jotting down a couple positive notes each day—focusing on the good will help you keep things in perspective and appreciate the great summer you’re having.
