Fashionable Lincoln Center

November 28, 2001

Yesterday, Pointe‘s assistant editor Margaret Fuhrer asked our Facebook friends and Twitter followers a question:

We love it when the world of high fashion meets the world of ballet, like Rodarte costuming the “Black Swan” stars. Which ballet classic would you like to see re-designed–and by which designer?

We got some awesome responses, from Vera Wang doing Romeo and Juliet to Balanchine’s Apollo in couture dresses to something by John Galliano or Thierry Mugler. Dancers have a long history of inspiring designers, and New York Public Library for the Performing Arts’ latest exhibition is dedicated to high fashion that has made its way on stage. Check out garments, photographs and other media of costumes by Henri Bendel, Coco Chanel, Oscar de la Renta, Isaac Mizrahi and other top designers for dance, theater and opera. It’s up now through January 22 at the library’s branch in Lincoln Center.

For my part, I vote for somebody teaming up Betsy Johnson with Wayne McGregor—although he usually goes for a clean, stripped-down look, I’d love to see his quirky movement outfitted in her eccentric whimsy.
